Wow.
If I wrote an article imitating people who think like old Jacky-boy it would be much less far fetched than this garbage. I suppose we should ban guns, and liquor too; because everyone who shoots a gun become becomes a murderer, and everyone who ever drinks liquor becomes a violent abusive alcoholic. Coincidently, that isn't even the point; Old Jack's shot in the dark isn't even in the right ballpark. I suppose Jack Thompson didn't even think about the places in the world were crimes on par with and worse than what he described - even in jest - actually occur. Genocide isn't something video games invented, there are things happening in the third world that Jack Thompson couldn't even imagine, even in his twisted little dreams. I suppose... they play Grand Theft Auto there too? I find it presumptuous and arrogant that he believes video games are even a minor source of violence in our society. We should be so lucky that video games are even close to modern society’s major problem.
We'd better outlaw games. Oh, and as I said liquor and guns have to go too! Oh wait... what about religion? (Coincidently religion only causes problems because of people like Jack, since if people took MEANING out of it instead of taking everything so literally, or perhaps thought subjectivly for like 30 seconds it wouldn't even be a problem) Religion has surely caused more death than every video game and violent movie ever imagined. Yet... I don't recall Jack even mentioning that, I wonder why? Personally, I don't have anything against guns (my dad is a gunsmith, and is an excellent example of responsible use of a firearm), liquor, or even Religion (I myself am Catholic), but I just thought I'd point out that people like Jack Thompson only paint everything with the same brush if it serves their purposes. Maybe, if the National Institute on Media and the Family, Jack or anyone else has something to say about violence in video games or any kind of media censorship they should advocate some common sense among parents, and that is the nerve that leads to the root of our society’s problems. As far as I'm concerned if people stopped being such safety Nazi's and tried to teach their kids some morality instead of shrugging off responsibility for their child’s physiological welfare onto other people we'd have a lot less troubled youth, and quite a few less loudmouthed self-righteous fools like Jack Thompson.
You may be thinking “Alright Mr. Smarty Pants, what is the problem with society today?”. Well… I’m glad you asked.
Accountability.
Whether it is moral or otherwise, people don’t hold themselves to principles higher than those understood by the human ID. The problem with a minor wanting an abortion isn’t that some sexually explicit music video drove her to have sex; it’s that she was never taught to be responsible. When you shelter your children as much as Jack Thompson would have you, they don’t understand responsibility. It’s not that abortions should be legal, or illegal, it’s that people should think for more than five seconds before they have sex, and if you get pregnant... take some responsibility for your actions. When you don’t even know what responsibility is - because your parent’s didn’t even raise you, the fucking TV did because they “knew nothing that could harm you would be seen” or anything they’d have to explain to you (heaven forbid YOU should explain something to your own fucking children) because of wonderful organizations like the National Institute on Media and the Family have homogenized TV - you look for an easy way out, a way to shrug off your responsibilies (just like mommy and daddy with with you) as a human being... ie Abortion. All I have to say is FUCK CENSORSHIP. I’m all for proactive parenting. Painting a picket fence for everyone to look at is just ignorant, and it only goes farther to cripple youth from even learning to deal with reality. You know what happens when you ban cars from driving on your street because it makes it safer for your kids? You kid goes a block down and gets hit by a car, you short-sighted idiots. And you know what happens when people worry about pot? Crystal Meth destroys your small towns.
